Playing Ninth Chords on Piano

Ninth chords are five-note chords that span the usual intervals up to a ninth (root-3-5-7-9); and most often, the ninth interval remains major, even in minor 9th chords.

Forming Major Seventh Chords

You probably know that a major triad is built with three notes: a root, a major third, and a perfect fifth. A major seventh chord also contains these notes, but has an added seventh interval. If that interval is major, the chord is a Major 7th chord; if the interval is minor, it's a dominant 7th chord:

 

 


What Is Timbre?
